You've got to start off the season with one or two witches sitting on your porch to greet your mail man and neighbors.
On Halloween night, you can even swap places with one of them and really give them a scare!
Here's how to make easy and inexpensive witches for your front porch:
Items you'll need:
Four towels
Black leotards or stockings
Pillow or cushions
Bra
Socks
Shoes
Turtle-neck sweater
Long Skirt or dress with long sleeves
Long sleeve blouse
Gloves
Shawl
Witch Hat
Wig
Mask or skull
This prop can be done in a few minutes with items lying around your house. If you don't have the items on the list...improvise!
Legs:
Take a towel and lay it out (length-wise) then roll it so that you have a long skinny roll. Do it again with another towel. Stuff each of the towels in dark-colored stockings or leotards. Some of the towel will stick out of the top (that's ok).
Chest and Abdomen:
Take a pillow and put a bra on it. Stuff if with some socks and put the pillow into the chest portion of the sweater. Take the bottom part of the pillow and stuff it into the top of the stockings to make a belly. If you don't have an extra pillow, use cushions and more towels. The top of the towels from the legs can be her buttocks.
Arms:
Take two more towels (smaller) and roll them and stuff them into the sleeves of a turtle-neck sweater.
Hands:
Take some black gloves or gardening gloves and lightly stuff them with paper towels, napkins or newspapers to make fingers that you can bend. Stuff the gloves into the sleeves of the turtle-neck sweater and pin them so they won't come off.
Dress:
Use a long skirt or dress and dress up your witch. (Be creative! She's like a big scary Barbie Doll!) Take a shawl or piece of fabric to drape over the back of your witch and her shoulders and pin it into place.
Head and face:
Look for anything that can be used for a head; a wig head, plastic skull, two-liter bottle of soda, etc. Put a cheap mask on it and stuff it into the neck of the turtle-neck sweater. Use one of those witch's hat with hair on it. (One year I didn't have a mask and just covered a soda bottle with black fabric and kept the hat really low so that you couldn't see the face!)
Shoes:
Find some shoes around the house that look like something an old lady would wear. Slip them onto the bottom of the legs.
